Choir Versions of Zangalewa

Zangalewa has proven very popular with choirs from around the world.  Many use a similar arrangement, but each applies a unique artistic vision.
Ave Musica is a mixed youth choir from Sofia, Bulgaria, conducted by Tania Nikleva-Vladeva. This performance is from a December, 2010, charity concert called "Friendly Notes for Angel" in Hall Universiada-East, Sofia. On this occasion they were accompanied by the Art Libitum percussion band led by Tania’s husband, Jordan Vladev. This arrangement is by the Belgian composer and conductor Vic Nees. The soloist at the beginning is tenor Ljubomur Angelov.

Tania says that they’ve performed Zangalewa many times over the past five years, and that Bulgarian audiences love it every time.

Alise Ojay directs two sister community choirs in the Southwest of England, the Crediton World Music Choir in the Devon countryside, and the nearby University of Exeter World Music Choir. Often performing together, these are non-auditioned choirs that attract singers of all ages. Their repertoire includes music from around the globe, including Afro-Cuban, First Nations, and Bulgarian songs.

Alise contacted Emilio to share this video of the choirs performing her arrangement of Zangalewa in March, 2012, at a gathering of community choirs. Emilio says this rendition has “energy like fire.”
